Hello and happy Monday!
Today, I want to chat about something that's been on my mind – the importance of oracy in the UK educational system.
It's no secret that oracy doesn't always get the attention it deserves in our schools. Despite its crucial role in personal development and professional success, only 25% of GCSE English Language grades are influenced by the oral component.
Equally concerning is the lack of comprehensive training for educators in teaching and assessing oracy. As key influencers in student development, teachers need the right tools to help students shine in public speaking, debates, and all kinds of verbal expression.
Adding to the mix, budget constraints often mean cuts to resources for oracy. Speech and drama programs, debating clubs – these enriching activities are often the first on the chopping block when finances get tight.
To top it off, recent studies show a whopping 70% of UK students feel unprepared for public speaking tasks when they enter higher education. Imagine getting thrown into a marathon without your running shoes!
Change is definitely overdue. I know I'm not alone in feeling this way. If you're as passionate as I am about empowering students through oracy, I'd love for you to join me in brainstorming solutions and strategies.
And here's the exciting part – I'm hosting a webinar this week where I'll be sharing some of the ways I prioritize oracy day-to-day. I’d love for you to join me.
Wishing you a fantastic week ahead,
